We came there for the Tinner Blues Fest from Baltimore so we had a HOTEL ROOM and we WALKED to see the two gentlemen you booked to play that night (cuz you are a sponsor). We sat down in the bar area and ordered some food and a round of beers/shooters that you PUSH on people with table tents and BIG menus full of Alcohol. Right away we could tell that your normal late dinner crowd was not there to hear music and ignored the great musicians. We loved it and showed it by clapping and cheering for them. I guess this is frowned upon in your establishments. After about 15-20 minutes of slow service we ordered another shooter. The waiter (non-descript hispanic male Annar? as was most of your staff) was slow giving us our second round. When he did come with the shooters we ordered 2 more beers knowing it would be awhile...the bar was about 6 feet from our table and empty.
At some point after the 2 beers arrived, the red shirt manager “JJ” showed up at our table and asked if we were ok? But not like Are we having fun? Cuz why should we right? He asked like a concerned father although I'm guessing we are older than him We said we are fine, here for the blues, having fun and staying at hotel down the street. We made it CLEAR we were walking the ¼ mile back to our hotel. He wasn’t impressed and proceeded to cut us off. After 2 shooters and 4 beers total…that is one hell of a conservative corporate policy...its a wonder you are still in business when within a mile there are MANY fine bars that let people have a good time until 2am

He did not say anyone was complaining about us enjoying the music, nothing about us clapping or talking with the musicians who are from our home town area, nothing about rudeness or treating the waiter (who we tipped very well still) bad NOTHING.

Just “you are cut off”. So we paid out $60+ tab and moved to the bar to keep enjoying the music. The whole time JJ is staring at us. We didn’t dare order a drink from the bar until about 30 minutes later when we asked for a beer and a glass of wine. The bartender said he had to ask permission from JJ. He wasn’t happy about it as he said we were “fine” and no one had a problem with us. JJ, now confusing us, let us get that round so we had mixed feelings at this point but still felt uncomfortable, unwelcome and it put a damper on the evening. We complained to a Tinner Hill festival board member who showed up and she agreed your place is NOT a good venue for music.

We left about 25 minutes later realizing we didn’t feel welcome and left before the group was finished their final set. The next day, at your festival booth, we saw another one of your managers (white female…very tall and nice) who was there Friday night (we thought she was with JJ since she didn’t have a uniform on). She apologized about JJ. We asked her why your staff could not handle such fun times and she agreed it wasn’t the best venue, it wasn’t advertised that the Applebee’s was going to have 2 amazing old blues musicians who didn’t deserve to have such a low turnout…then she tried to make up for it by giving us free appetizer coupons that we can’t even use in Baltimore area.

So to wrap up, blues fans love good sponsors, but if you don’t prepare your staff and regular customers (culture/ethnic differences clearly an issue with your waiters and JJ) for the fact that some happy loud people are going to be standing in your bar area then shame on you. Better yet you should hot have booked the musicians in the first place since your regular crowd was clearly not impressed. The maybe 6-8 of us there to hear the blues could have easily been 40-50 and then how would JJ have reacted??? Called the police? The families eating at the tables would have ran out in horror?
Applebee’s…keep supporting the awesome significant work of the Tinner Blues Foundation/memorial/civil rights movement etc. but STAY OUT OF THE MUSIC VENUE BUSINESS. Your staff and regular patrons can’t handle fun people like us. We otherwise had a good time.
